FAQ

Common questions about using QRIS across borders.

What is QRIS Cross-border?
QRIS Cross-border is the interconnection of Indonesia's national QR code payment standard (QRIS) with other countries' QR codes for payment transactions through cooperation schemes initiated and established by central banks and business models involving the industries of both countries.
What is the purpose of QRIS Cross-border?
QRIS Cross-border aims to facilitate trade and tourism activities, especially for MSMEs, and strengthen macroeconomic stability through the use of local currencies in bilateral transactions. Additionally, this initiative is believed to provide more choices for cross-border payment transaction users and plays an important role in increasing transaction efficiency and promoting digital economic and financial inclusion. With the development of QRIS Cross-border, Indonesian citizens can transact in partner countries, and merchants in Indonesia can receive payments from foreign tourists.
What is the QRIS Cross-border business model?
The QR payment connectivity transaction scheme uses an interconnection model between the switchers of both countries where settlement is carried out through Appointed Cross Currency Dealer (ACCD) banks using local currencies. With this interconnection, partner country tourists can transact by scanning QRIS using their country's payment app. Conversely, Indonesian tourists can scan the partner country's QR using an Indonesian payment app connected to QRIS.
Do I need to register to use QRIS Cross-border?
No registration is required. Indonesian users can directly transact using Indonesian payment apps that have participated. Indonesian merchants can receive payments from partner country tourists through their existing QRIS.
Are there any fees charged to Indonesian merchants when partner country tourists transact in Indonesia?
The amount and fees charged to Indonesian merchants are the same as domestic QRIS transactions using the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) scheme set by Bank Indonesia.
How fast can I make/receive payments with QRIS Cross-border?
Transactions can be received in real-time after the transaction is successful.
How do I find merchants that accept QRIS Cross-border?
You can make QR payments at stores/merchants that display the following logos: In Thailand, look for the QR PromptPay logo. In Malaysia, look for the QR DuitNow logo. In Singapore, look for the QR NETS logo. In Japan, look for the JPQR Global logo.
Will I receive a notification when making/receiving QRIS Cross-border payments?
Yes. Both the paying user and the receiving merchant will immediately receive notifications from their payment app when a transaction is successful.
What is the transaction limit for QRIS Cross-border?
The transaction limit for QRIS Cross-border is the same as the QRIS transaction limit in Indonesia, which is IDR 10,000,000 per transaction.
What currency is used and is the exchange rate automatically converted?
Indonesian tourists transacting in partner countries: The exchange rate is automatically converted so that the Rupiah balance in the Indonesian tourist's payment account is debited directly from the Indonesian payment app used, and the partner country merchant receives a successful transaction notification in the partner country's currency. Partner country tourists transacting in Indonesia: The exchange rate is automatically converted so that the funds in the partner country's currency in the tourist's payment account are debited directly from the partner country's payment app used, and the Indonesian merchant receives a successful transaction notification in Rupiah.
What should I do if there is a problem or dispute during a transaction?
If you experience problems with payments using QRIS Cross-border, please report to the Indonesian PJP whose app you are using.
Are QRIS Cross-border transactions safe?
QRIS Cross-border security features are one aspect assessed during trials. After the trial process, providers must meet operational readiness, security and system reliability, risk management implementation, and consumer protection requirements before obtaining Bank Indonesia approval to become a QRIS Cross-border provider. PJP apps must have security features to help detect and prevent transaction fraud. QRIS Cross-border users, including merchants, need to understand the features of using QRIS Cross-border to ensure safe transactions, including: ensuring that the scanned QRIS matches the merchant name where the transaction is made, and checking transaction notifications on the app after the payment is made by both consumers and merchants. If a consumer suspects fraud or problems during a transaction, they are urged to immediately contact the relevant PJP.

Other Countries

Common questions about countries not yet supported by QRIS Cross-border.

Can QRIS be used in China?
Yes. Since November 2024, China has become a QRIS Cross-border partner country. Indonesian travelers can pay using QRIS at merchants displaying the UnionPay or Alipay logo in China, and Chinese tourists can make QRIS payments in Indonesia through the Alipay and China UnionPay apps.
